Bermuda Diabetes Association presents
Health Tune Ups...
Proudly Sponsored by
Bermuda is faced with new challenges in the area of public health due to the economic downturn. Insufficient funds are cited as the reason why many persons living with diabetes are not monitoring blood sugar and blood pressure levels as often as they should to stay on top of health issues.
The Bermuda Diabetes Education Team will be offering free Health Tune Ups in 2012 after the success of the inauguaral program that screened over 350 people in 2011. Our goal is to address the ever increasing health dilemmas of the diabetes population.

2011 Health Tune Ups
The education team were extended the full support of the Mayor of St. Georges, the Hon Kenneth Bascome , along with Mr. Courtney Trott of the Corporation of St. Georges. Mr. Trott welcomed the opportunity to host the free screenings in the town of St. George’s. The St. Georges Town Hall is the venue for residents from the Eastern parishes. The pilot programme, known as “Health Tune Ups” was launched By Mayor Bascome at the Town Hall on Tuesday, September 13, 2011 at 11:00am.
The Washington Properties Group were extremely supportive and generous by offering the education team space in the mall for persons residing in the central parishes who can benefit from the free screenings. Mr. Paul Cranage threw his full support behind the programme acknowledging the need for this type of service in the community. The screening station for the Washington Mall are be accessible from the Church Street entrance into the new phase of the Mall.
Leading support for free screenings in the West end of the island was the
Venerable Doctor Arnold T. Hollis JP and Arch Deacon Emeritus of Bermuda. Rev. Hollis, along with his church family from St. James Church opened the doors to the church hall for residents living in the Western parishes. Rev. Hollis and his church family are very keen on extending the free service to residents of the Western Parishes. They have worked diligently alongside the education team to ensure that the Sandy’s community are able to take full advantage of such an important health programme.
We are overwhelmed by the generous support we have received from the business and religious sectors of the community to get the programme up and running. The Association has been encouraged by the response to the free service over a three month period and look forward to carrying the programme forward in the New Year.
We would like to encourage all persons who are living with diabetes or, at risk for diabetes to come out and take advantage of the free health screenings. This is an excellent opportunity for persons who have been unable to visit the doctor to take responsibility for their health.
